L'histoire 

 

Pickax a une nouvelle attraction : un Centre Artistique construit derrière la grange de Qwill, pas loin de Trevelyan Road. Là, les artistes du coin travaillent dans des ateliers et exposent leurs oeuvres. 

C'est ainsi que Qwill rencontre de nouveaux personnages : Paul Skumble, le portraitiste, Duff Campbell, l'aquarelliste, Miss Papillon (Phoebé Sloan) qui peint des papillons ...

Au journal, c'est aussi l'effervescence car Hixie Rice organise un concours d'orthographe : la Coupe des fanions, qui passionnera tout Pickax et surtout le jeune Culvert, brillant petit garçon de 9 ans.

 

Mais ce printemps trop précoce dans le Comté de Moose va encore révéler bien de mauvaises surprises: après avoir été traitée de "sorcière", la vieille Maude Coggins est prise au piège dans l'incendie volontaire de sa ferme... Koko avait pressenti la chose : il faisait sans arrêt tomber le livre des "Sorcières de Salem". Bizarrement, juste avant son décès elle avait vendu pour une bouchée de pain sa ferme à la Northern Land Improvement.

 

Pour finir, le Centre Artistique est cambriolé, les dessins de Daphné disparaissent et Derek se fait embobiner par Chester Ramsbottom -politicien peu recommandable, pour diriger le restaurant Chet's Bar & Barbecue...

 Avis et sentiments  

 

Quelques longueurs dans cet opus. Et aussi quelques changements cartographiques. Ainsi le complexe d'Ittibittiwassee devient un centre pour personnes âgées situé à Bloody Creek. On peut cependant imaginer que ce complexe est distinct de celui du Village Indien.

 

D'autre part, nous découvrons une onzième mine : la Old Glory.

Les dix autres étant : la Goodwinter, la Trisdale, La Dimsdale, la Honey Hill, la Black Creek, les Trois Pins, la Moosejaw, la Big B, la Buckshot, la Smith's Foly.

 

La lecture reste cependant bien agréable avec de délicieux passages comme par exemple, Thornton Haggis gravant des phrases sur les pierres tombales. Certaines -gravées à l'époque de son grand-père et son arrière grand-père sont fameuses :

 

 

"Ici repose un homme heureux. Jamais marié".

"Ses reins ont eu raison de lui".

"A mangé du mauvais poisson".

"Abattue par son cher mari". Sur la pierre voisine : " Pendu pour avoir tué sa chère épouse".

 

Anecdotes

 

C'est sur l'emplacement du projet de maison de Polly qu'est construit le Centre Artistique.

On peut imaginer que des oeuvres bien réelles auraient pu être exposées dans ce Centre. Je pense à Rien Poortvliet, le grand illustrateur néerlandais et aussi à Beatrix Potter, la maman de Jeannot Lapin.

C'est aussi dans ce livre que Qwill fait construire un belvédère pour les chats : il s'agit d'une petite construction en bois où les chats peuvent observer à loisir les oiseaux. L'idée lui est venue quand il passait ses vacances dans les Potato Mountains.

 

Autres faits marquants : Qwill se voit offrir le fameux vélo couché (tout le monde sait qu'il réfléchit mieux en position allongé, pieds surélevés) ... Et on lui dépose devant sa grange deux chats ...

Katie et Mac seront finalement adoptés par la Bibliothèque Municipale. Les bénévoles qui avaient désertés la bibliothèque suite à l'informatisation des prêts de livre, vont revenir rien que pour les deux greffiers !

Voilà deux grandes vérités sur l'aquarelle. Le plus dur étant à mon avis de savoir s'arrêter...

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

Summary 

 

Pickax has a new attraction : an Artistic Center built behind Qwill's barn -not far from Trevelyan Road. The artists of the area work and show their drawings and paintings in the Centre.
Qwill meet new characters: Paul Skumble the portraitist, Duff Campbell watercolorist, and Phoebe Sloan who paints butterflies ...
At the same time, all the town is excited because of a spelling bee organized by Hixie Rice ... Culvert, a brilliant young boy is anxiously happy to participate.

But, all is not well in Moose County : at first Maude Coggins is treated as a witch and then her farm is burned in a criminal fire ! Koko with his mysterious power had felt the problem and brought down a book about witches in Salem... But that's not all : the Northern Land Improvement Company bought the farm from Maude with a unfair price ! 

 

Someone stages a robbery in the Artistic Center and Daphne's drawings disappear...

Chester Ramsbottom -a politician, offers a bad job to Derek Cuttlebrink in his restaurant : Chet's Bar & Barbecue...

 

Everything is going wrong in too earlier spring ! 

 

 

Some feelings and ideas about the book 

 

 There are some map changes. For example Ittibbittiwassee Complex becomes a house for senior people, near Bloody Creek. But we can imagine that this complex is different from the first because of the flats.

 

We also discover an eleventh mine : the Old Glory.

The other ten are : Goodwinter, Trisdale, Dimsdale, Honey Hill, Black Creek, Three Pines, Moosejaw, Big B, Buckshot, Smith's Foly.

 

The reading stays very pleasant with humorous sections such as . Grand father and Great-grand-father of Thornton Haggis engraved odd sentences on tombstones. Some of them are hilarious 

"Here rests a happy man. Never married."
"Had eaten a bad fish."
"Shot by her dear husband." On the nearby stone: "Hanged for killing his beloved wife."

 

Anecdotes

 

The Artistic Centre (or center ?)  is built on the site of Polly's old project house.

We can imagine that real paintings could be displayed. I think of Rien Poortvliet a famous Dutch illustrator and also Beatrix Potter. You can see some of their works in the middle of this page.

 

It's also in this book that Qwill built a belvedere for his cats. He had this idea when he was on holidays in the Potato Mountains.

 

Other facts :

Qwill receive a strange bicycle ... He can ride in a reclined position ! ... Everybody knows he thinks better when he is lying with his feet up.

One day, Qwill finds two stray cats behind his house... Katie and Mac (their names) will find a new home, the public library.
